These are both dangerous for the same reason.

It is possible that an asteroid large enough to destroy the biosphere could hit earth. Smaller asteroids or super volcanos could put so much dust and gas in the atmosphere that we would lose the growing season for a few years. This might destroy civilization if not humanity.
